Is your parent or loved one moving into a care home?

Posted on

A parent or loved one moving into a care home is a significant physical and emotional event for all the family. At Peninsula Care Homes, we pride ourselves on our vast experience of easing the transition and the exceptional care we provide when your loved ones are living with us.

We have many conversations with families about what life will be like and what should be done to prepare, so we wanted to share some of our experience. This article touches on some of the most important areas to consider, including the environment, activities, food and nutrition, companionship and safety. Of course, if at any point you’d like to talk to us, please call.

All our homes are praised for their homely atmosphere. We are a family owned and operated business; in business for over twenty years and this home from home environment is central to our ethos. One review put it best:

“I feel that my mum was getting excellent care within the home and the staff are very professional and very caring towards my mum and all the residents. Every time I'm down there they're so professional, do things with them such as activities, singers and keep them occupied for many hours. The whole staff are very friendly and genuine. I regularly take my mum to the dining room which is fantastically laid out and she enjoys her meals at the home. I think her experience in the home she is enjoying it because it's very homely.”

Much has been written about our current loneliness epidemic of the elderly in our society. The World Health Organisation declared in November 2023 that loneliness is a global health concern and can be as bad for health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Our experience is that life in our homes is filled with fun, laughter and companionship. We often receive reviews on the transformation of a parent when they’ve moved from being lonely in their own home to experiencing more of a community in one of our care homes.

We of course understand that this move into an environment with more people is not without its ups and downs. We know initially that some residents will enjoy more time in their own room before venturing into our communal spaces.

Visits from friends and family members is also a key part of daily life and we are always open to visitors. Some times of the day are quieter than others and together we’ll be able to work out the best time for you all. You’re welcome to join us for mealtimes. We believe we have a wonderful, balanced, nutritious and varied weekly menu. Our chefs are experienced in catering to various dietary requirements. We often see the health and well-being of people who join us in our homes, improve after their first few weeks. We feel this was best put by a recent review:

“My father came into Bramble Down Nursing Home on the 30th October, he had a fabulous warm welcome from all the staff who made sure that he was comfortable and settled in ok. Dad would spend time in the canteen area having his lunch, having a laugh with other residents and staff. He loved the food, but mostly the puddings and cake every day and the odd G&T ice supplied by kitchen. The Bramble Down team also welcomed us in as if it were our home, offering comfort and reassurance, sandwiches and loads of cups of tea, the cheese toasties were amazing and well needed. Thank you all so very much.”

Our homes keep people safe, so that family have peace of mind that they are never far from our team who are highly qualified and are trained to react appropriately should situations arise. Each home is supported by external clinicians, specialists and allied professionals, whom we work closely alongside, ensuring that the persons’ medical needs and well-being is always prioritised.

We endeavour to take people in our homes to places, such as walks along the seafront, visits to garden centres or pony sanctuary’s, bowling, shows, involvement within the community etc, wherever and whenever feasible to do so. These outings are always enjoyable and talked about with fondness.

Our team have a wealth of experience and everything they do for our residents, comes from a place of care and kindness. Exceptional care is what we strive to deliver across all our homes and you only have to take a read of our reviews to see that we do this in abundance.

We would love to hear from you if you’d like to talk about your individual needs.
