As part of our collaborative work with the RNIB in July 2023 we were delighted to welcome Linzi, RNIB’s UK Training and Development Officer, to Plymouth. Linzi travelled from Scotland to deliver practical workshops to staff across all our five homes.
The workshops focused on the experience of people living with both dementia and sight loss. Staff learnt about the most common sight loss conditions that affect the older generation and how these can impact on daily life.
Linzi bought resources with her to enable staff to experience first hand what life can be like living with conditions such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic eye disease.
Staff also took part in sighted guide walks out in the community where one person was blindfolded and put their trust in their sighted guide to support them to safely navigate the environment - communication and technique being key!
So much learning during these workshops which built on our previous sessions with the RNIB earlier on in the year. Moving forward RNIB Vision Passports will become part of Peninsula’s care planning to ensure we continue to best meet people’s needs.
Huge thanks to Linzi and the RNIB for working with us and supporting us to continually develop our skills and knowledge.
