Person Centred Care - One to One with Resident

Posted on

Recently, I spent some dedicated one to one time with Kevin, focusing on an important part of his life history and identity – football.

At just 66 years old Kevin lives with advanced Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson’s related dementia. Despite the challenges these conditions can present, it was evident that football remains deeply rooted within his sense of self and continues to evoke positive emotions and meaningful memories.

During our time together, Kevin spoke proudly about his achievements as a former youth player for Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle. As an avid football fan, he was able to share stories from his playing days, reminiscing about matches, training sessions and former team mates. Football provided a familiar and engaging topic of conversation, allowing Kevin to reconnect with a period of his life that brought him great enjoyment and achievement.

As we discussed old team mates and football memories, Kevin appeared animated, engaged and visibly proud of his accomplishments. His passion for the sport shone through and he was able to recall details that demonstrated the lasting significance football has had throughout his life.

This interaction highlighted the importance of recognising the person beyond their diagnosis. By focusing on Kevin’s strengths, interests and achievements we were able to support his emotional wellbeing, self-esteem and sense of identity. The conversation provided an opportunity for meaningful engagement and reinforced the value of person- centred care in promoting positive outcomes for individuals living with dementia.

It was inspiring to see how reconnecting with such a significant part of his personal history enabled Kevin to express himself, share his achievements and experience a sense of pride and belonging. His eyes sparkled as he recalled this time in his life. We also took some time to discuss the Football World Cup which is currently taking place.

I have always been passionate about understanding each person’s life story and using it to create meaningful connections and enrich daily life.
